Can You Eat Avocados On Nutrisystem?

By: Ava Alderman: I sometimes hear from people who have gotten into the habit of eating a particular fattening food in their day to day life. So, when the time comes that they need to go on a diet, they are worried about having to break this habit. And many times, they genuinely enjoy the food and the ritual of preparing it and they do not want to give it up.

An example of one type of food is avocados. Luckily, this food does have a good deal of nutritional value. It’s not like breads, desserts, or processed foods that are mostly empty calories. It contains very healthy fats, is high in fiber, and is full of vitamins. But the problem is that it is very high in those healthy fats. Like nuts and dark chocolate, this is a food that is healthy for you but that should be used in moderation, especially when you are dieting.

I might get a comment like: “are avocados even allowed on nutrisystem? The problem is that I love guacamole. I eat it regularly. I know that I might have to modify it and make a healthier version, but I don’t want to stop eating it altogether.”

The good news is that you can eat avocados on nutrisystem. The bad news is that you have to have a little moderation. This food is listed in the “other” category. Unlike some categories like smart carbs and power fuels, the “other” category is a little more restricted. You are allowed to have three servings in the “other” category every day. And while avocado is a food that is allowed under this category, the serving size is one tablespoon of it as long as its pureed. If you are eating the whole fruit, then you can have one eighth of the fruit.

This might not seem like a lot, but keep in mind that you get three of these per day, so long as you aren’t going to want to eat anything else in this “other” category. I think if you were flexible, you could make small servings of guacamole with this set up. If you used a simple recipe that used tomatoes and onions, all of these things are allowed on the diet. Sure, the serving of the avocados themselves would be small, but you have to expect that on a diet.  You could load up on the tomatoes and onions without any problem.  These compromises aren’t horrible, I don’t think. And you wouldn’t want to do anything that might slow your results. By: Ava Alderman:  This is the time of year that many people are motivated to get healthy.  It’s also the time of year that people are researching nutrisystem and trying to figure out the best and easiest way to place an order.  This article will outline the steps of this process to make things a little easier when getting started.

Step One: Choose The Right Plan For You:  The first step is deciding on your plan.  They offer plans for men and women.  After that, they offer: regular, traditional plans (men’s and women’s core, basic, and uniquely yours;) options for people with diabetes (nutrisystem D;) and plans for people over 65 (nutrisystem silver.)  Once you’ve narrowed it down that way, you’ll have to choose between what types of food, support, and selection you want.

You’ll be choosing between the core, uniquely yours, and basic lines. To make that decision, first ask yourself if you think that it is worth it to pay extra for the gourmet, frozen items, which make up the “uniquely yours” menu.  Some people will answer a definite yes. And if this describes you, then you will want to choose the uniquely yours plan.

Choose Your Exercise And Remember It’s Only 30 Minutes Broken Up Any Way That You Want:  People tend to over-think this also.  They believe that they have to suddenly become athletes or learn a new work out regimen.  To be quite honest, nutrisystem does not ask a lot of you in terms of exercise.  All they are asking is thirty minutes of movement.  This could be two brisk 15 minute walks.  This could be three ten minutes sessions of roller blading.  Whatever you enjoy doing, do it in whatever combination gets you to thirty minutes per day.  It really is that simple.

Give Yourself Some Credit:  Many people have good experience in the beginning of the diet.  It’s designed to have you seeing results quickly. Many people are happy right out of the gate.  But of course, we all hit plateaus and have periods in our lives where it’s harder to be in compliance all of the time.

When you struggle, do not quit.  If you cheat, get back in compliance as soon as possible and don’t get mad at yourself.  This is normal.  You do not have to be perfect on this diet.  And you likely won’t be.  Do the best that you can and give yourself credit for stepping up the plate.  Nothing worthwhile is without effort.  But this is designed so that your efforts are rewarded.

Can You Have Potatoes On Nutrisystem?

Worldwide, potatoes are by far the most popular vegatable. In fact, people consume almost double the amount of potatoes than tomatoes, which is the second most popular vegetable.  So it’s no suprise that many people are concerned that they’ll have to give up potatoes while on nutrisystem.  Someone might say, “I absolutely love potatoes and I know that you’re not supposed to have starchy or white foods.  So am I going to have to give up potatoes on nutrisystem?  Or is it just fried foods that I have to worry about?”

If you look at the grocery guide, you will see that sweet potatoes are listed as a smart carb (at a serving size of 1/2 cup.)  I’m not a nutrisystem counselor so I’m only guessing at this, but I think that they encourage sweet potatoes because they contain such high amounts of vitamin C and typically aren’t prepared with as much butter, sour cream, or oil as white potatoes.

That said, nutrisystem doesn’t completely leave out white potatoes in its own offerings.  They do offer loaded potatoes for lunch and meatloaf and mashed potatoes for dinner.  Additionally, nutrisystem’s newsletter (The Leaf) offers recipes for game day stuffed baked potatoes and air fried potatoes that omit the oil.  I’d strongly encourage you to reach out to a nutrisystem counselor for specific serving sizes about white potatoes (since I’m not seeing this on the grocery guide,) but the diet doesn’t often doesn’t completely exclude all starches. Instead, they just limit the serving size of them.  Since the nutrisystem menu includes breads, bagels, muffins, potatoes etc in their own meals, I don’t think that they’ve completely excluded potatoes.  Instead, they encourage sweet potatoes (since the nutrition is higher,) but I’m sure that white potatoes in small portion sizes would not be catastrophic.  In an article talking about potatoes in the Leaf, it’s noted that by themselves, potatoes are a low fat food.  The problem is that we often prepare them by frying them or by slathering them with sour cream and butter.  I think that if you can steer clear of the fattening toppings or preparations, they can be fine.  Even better, stick with sweet potatoes or just get your potato fix from the nutrisystem menu offerings.  Again, it’s quick and easy to ask a nutrisystem counselor specifically about potatoes.  They are your best source of information.  My answer is only based on my interpretation of the grocery guide and articles in “The Leaf,” but I’m not a counselor.  You can reach a counselor via the nutrisystem website here: Get 40% off every order + Free bars & Shakes and FREE SHIPPING!

Does The Nutrisystem Fast Five Work?

By: Ava Alderman: I’ve been getting a lot of correspondence asking about nutrisystem’s new fast five. People sometimes wants to know what it’s about, what it includes, and how it works. If that describes your questions, you can read more here.  But mostly, people get the general idea of what it is (and how could you not with nutrisystem aggressively advertising it on TV so often right now?) but what most are more interested in is whether or not it actually works.

Since it’s new, you really just have people’s personal experience to go on. It’s so new that I haven’t yet seen any studies regarding it. The Nutrisystem Diet Approach To Weight Loss

Many people who ask me about nutrisystem have researched it, but some have not.  Those who haven’t done a lot of digging are looking for information about what type of diet nutrisystem really is.  What is their approach?  What is restricted?  What is encouraged or required?

This article will try to define, in the simplest terms, the nutrisystem approach to weight loss.  I’m not an expert or counselor (and I’ll post a link where you can reach out to a nutrisystem counselor with any questions,) but here are my own observations.  This diet is one of convenience. Most of the food that you eat will be provided.  You will eat one nutrisystem breakfast, lunch, snack / dessert, and dinner per day.  So if you love to cook for yourself, this diet is probably not going to be a good fit for you.  But if you want the convenience of not having to cook and to count calories for yourself, then you might like the convenience aspect of it.  (You do get to add in your own food as side items with each meal.  You will be able to add in fruit / veggies / dairy etc.)  Plus there are flex meals where you do get to cook for yourself sometimes. There is also an emphasis on getting food that you’ll actually want to eat that is mainstream or comfort type food.  It’s not all rabbit food.  There are foods like donuts, waffles, pizza, burgers, chips, stir fries, wraps, etc.  You are also allowed to have carbs, but there’s a real emphasis on eating non-starchy carbs so that your glycemic levels are kept steady. They very much encourage vegetables and many of them are unlimited, meaning that you can have as many as you want.  And while they do allow you to add in your own sides, you can’t add in an unlimited amount of whatever you want.  There are portion sizes that they give you and, the healthier the food, the more of it you get.  This is a good thing, though, because it is really training you to make good choices once you get off of the program.

In terms of exercise, they want for you to move for half and hour per day, but they really do not care how you break this up.  They really are all about you having an easy time of it, but they stress safe weight loss.  By requiring the three meals plus a snack / dessert and side items, they want to make sure that you are getting enough calories and nutrients.  Even so, many people do get pretty impressive results with nutrisystem.  This is a diet that wants its users to be able to eat food that they would normally want while losing weight in a sustainable and relatively painless way (although portion sizes are controlled and exercise is included.)  It’s not really a diet for people who love to cook, are not willing to do any exercise, or who want drastic or unsafe weight loss.  The approach is to make it as easy as is feasibly possible, while also training the user to make healthy choices and to make additional movement a priority.   They try not to be overly restrictive, but they do control portion sizes and reward healthy choices with larger portions.  Here’s a nutrisystem discount as well as where you can reach out to a counselor: Get 40% off every order + Free bars & Shakes and FREE SHIPPING!

The Nutrisystem Black Friday and Cyber Monday Sales – $150 Off

I’m Worried That Nutrsiystem’s Flex Meals Will Either Mess Us My Results Or Make Me Want To Cheat

In theory, you’d think that the idea of having flex meals or “off diet” meals on any diet would be very attractive.  When you’re talking about the nutrisystem diet, flex meals are healthy meals that you prepare on your own.  You don’t have to eat what the diet provides when you are eating flex meals.  Depending on your plan, nutrisystem lets you eat a variety of your meals “off the diet.”  Many people understandably look forward to this.  Who doesn’t want to have a break once in while?  However, with the anticipation can become the worry.  What if getting used to going “off diet” makes you want to cheat?  Or what if it messes up your weight loss?

Someone might say, “I’ve had a huge amount of success on my turbo take off week on nutrisystem.  I lost more weight than I anticipated and I felt great.  But now I’m on week two and it’s my understanding that I will be adding in ‘flex meals.’  Frankly, I’m afraid of this.  I’ve been doing so well.  I don’t want to slow down my weight loss.  I don’t want to be tempted to cheat.  I have friends who look forward to flex meals, but I actually don’t.  I worry about cravings.”

Other than giving you some variety, the very important reason that they want you to do flex meals is because you need to learn how to plan and prepare healthful meals.  The goal is that one day you won’t need to depend on the prepackaged meals and can maintain your weight loss on your own.  In this way, the flex meals are sort of training wheels for that day when you won’t need the diet anymore.

In all honestly, you get some practice toward this when you add your sides to the prepackaged nutrisystem meals.  You get used to looking at the grocery guide to know what serving size you can have of each food.  You learn that starchy, fatty, or surgery foods mean smaller serving sizes and that low glycemic foods mean bigger serving sizes.  The flex meals are exactly like this on a larger scale.

A Typical Day On Nutrisystem: Examples Of Foods, Exercises, Etc.

By: Ava Alderman:  I sometimes hear from people who are very intrigued by or interested in the nutrisystem diet, but who just can’t envision how their lives would work once they were on it.  They might know that they eat some of the diet meals and some fresh groceries. And they might know that they should throw in some exercise.  But they don’t know how much of each component is required and when it is required.  They’d like to know what would be expected of them and what their experience might be like.  It’s hard to envision this unless you have some concrete examples.

So in the following article, I’ll outline an entire day on nutrisystem, including all major meals, snacks and dessert, plus exercise.

8:00am: Breakfast:  There are so many good choices for breakfast, but I have to pick just one. For the purposes of this article, I’m going to chose the biscotti bites.  They are fabulous and have over 500 positive reviews on the company’s website. (To keep things simple, I’m including only things from the core and basic menus.  There are some wonderful foods from the select / frozen line, but not every one is going to pay more money for them.  If you’re interested in what this offers, you can look at that menu on the nutrisystem website here )

10:30: Midmorning snack – Let’s pick yogurt with fruit.  Here is where you’ll add in those groceries. A lot of people find it very helpful to combine different food groups in one snack.  In this example, you’re hitting the categories of both dairy and fruit.  Another example of combining two would be carrot sticks with low fat ranch dressing.

12:30 Lunch: Fettuccine Alfredo plus green salad.  I’ve chosen this because it’s one of the highest rated lunches that isn’t frozen.  The fettuccine comes from the diet and the salad is one of those fresh add ins that you’d provide yourself.

Exercise:  I find that this is a the time of day where many people can fit in 10 minutes of exercise (the daily 3 exercise plan on nutrisystem suggests 3 ten minute sessions, although you can complete this in any time chunks which are most convenient.  In this example, I’ll include power walking for ten minutes because most people will be at work here and this is something that requires no special equipment.

3:30: Afternoon snack: A nice option would be string cheese and tomato slices. Again, here’s an example of dairy and healthy fat plus a vegetable.

5:00 Exercise: Let’s pick biking.  I find it really best for my schedule to get the exercise out of the way at this point.  How much I’d do here depends on if I got anything done earlier in the day. If not, I’d set aside half an hour.  But in terms of this article, we did ten minutes at lunch, so we’d do twenty minutes here.  Again, they suggest three sessions of ten minutes each, but if one half hour session works better, that’s fine.

6:30 Dinner: Chicken pot pie with pear slices and cottage cheese.  The chicken pot pie comes from the diet.  The pear slices and cottage cheese would come from your grocery add ins.

7:00 Dessert.  The diet provides prepackaged desserts.  These are not part of the grocery add ins.  I’ll choose the chocolate cake simply because it’s fabulous and it’s a classic that most people like.  You could also have one of the diet snacks if you feel like that instead.

So there you have it. In this example, it’s 7:00 pm and all of your meal plus snack requirements plus exercise is out of the way, freeing you up to enjoy time on other things.  As you can hopefully see, this isn’t too difficult, and you’re eating pretty decent food as part of a normal life.  I hope this gives you an idea of what a typical day on nutrisystem might look like. What Is The Difference Between The Nutrsiystem Snacks Or Desserts

Many people who are researching nutrisystem notice that there are snacks and desserts built into the plan.  If you look on the nutrisystem site, you will notice that the desserts and snacks are on the same page of the website.  People often wonder if this means that they are interchangeable and if not, which you should choose more of as part of your package?  This article will try to address these concerns, but please note that I’m not a nutrisystem counselor.  Please reach out to one if you have any doubt.   This is just my own interpretation from reading the literature.

From what I am reading, every day on nutrisystem has two snacks and one dessert built in.  Basically, you’re supposed to have a mid-morning and mid-afternoon snack as well as a dessert with dinner.  Since most packages don’t come with enough snacks for you to have a nutrisystem snack all of the time, most people will use add on groceries for their snacks.  Meaning they will perhaps have a piece of fruit, a serving of vegetables, or a little protein or carbs.  For example, a good snack might be an apple with low fat peanut butter, a cup of cottage cheese, or perhaps yogurt.  (Nutrisystem sends you guidelines about your add in groceries, so you won’t have to guess about how to add in snacks.) However, some of the packages do come with some prepackaged diet snacks and you can use these for your mid-morning or mid-afternoon snack.

And any desserts that come with your package can be used for your dinner dessert.  If you look on the nutrisystem website, you’ll also see that the snacks and desserts are very similar in terms of calories and fats, so in that sense I do not see why you can’t use them interchangeably if you’d like.  For example, you can see for yourself that both the chocolate covered pretzels (dessert) and popcorn (snack) have 130 calories and 6 grams of fat.  They’re virtually identical in terms of what they would add to your daily calories and fat.  The same is true of the cheese puffs (snack) and the peanut butter cookie (dessert.)
